Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2 starring Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, and Trisha in the lead has taken a good start at the box office in India. According to early estimates, the movie has scored an all-India gross in the range of Rs. 28 to 29 crores, making it one of the biggest openers for the Tamil Film Industry.
The start is however much lower than the September 2022 release, Ponniyin Selvan 1, which had opened at Rs. 39 crores in India. The reason for a low start is attributed to the relatively lower hype surrounding the film primarily due to the slow-paced period drama genre. Tamil Nadu has collected Rs. 17 crores, whereas the rest of India has put up a total collection of Rs. 11 to 12 crores gross.
Much like Part 1, the second part will also get support from the families in Tamil Nadu and put up a big total in the long run. The initial reports from the ground are positive and the film will be looking at a finish of Rs. 150 crores or more in Tamil Nadu. These would be good numbers, however, might look a little smaller because of the history created by Ponniyin Selvan 1 at the local box office.
The Hindi version has collected Rs. 2 crores nett and will be showing growth on Saturday and Sunday, but the core audience of PS 2 will rest in the home market as the talk outside of Tamil Nadu might not really be that good due to the strong cultural references.
