Justin Bieber is reportedly nearing a $200 million deal to sell the rights to his entire music catalog. According to Complex tabloid, the Canadian pop star is in talks with Hipgnosis Capital for the deal which would cover his full discography, which spans six albums and a number of one-off singles and collaborations. The same company purchased catalog rights to Justin Timberlake’s discography earlier this year for $100 million.
Previously, Variety reported that Hipgnosis also bought the song catalog of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen in March with the details of the acquisition hushed. The purchase was made through the Blackstone-backed Hipgnosis Songs Capital ICAV fund.
If it’s a done deal, it will be the largest music deal in the company’s history. The deal would cover all six albums released by Bieber, as well as a slew of singles and collabs he’s done over the years. Bieber is considerably younger than the majority of artists who sell their music catalog.
In December 2021, Bruce Springsteen sold both his master recordings and publishing rights to Sony Music in a deal of $500 million, according to multiple outlets. The Red Hot Chili Peppers sold the rights to its song catalog for a reported $150 million that same year. In 2020, Bob Dylan sold over 600 copyrights to Universal Music Group in a deal reportedly valued at over $300 million.
In other news, Bieber recently slammed clothing brand H&M for dropping a collection featuring the pop artist’s images without his consent. “I DIDN’T APPROVE ANY OF THE MERCH COLLECTION THAT THEY PUT UP AT H&M .. all without my permission and approval,” Bieber wrote on his Instagram Stories. “SMH I WOULDN’T BUY IT IF I WERE YOU.”
“The H&M MERCH THEY MADE OF ME IS TRASH AND I DIDN’T APPROVE IT DON’T BUY IT,” he added, urging fans to not buy from the said collection. Meanwhile, H&M said in a statement, “As with all other licensed products and partnerships, H&M followed proper approval procedures.”
